Striping long serial numbers

Dear all,
I have CPE with very long serial number. In order to use it for set several different values based on that serial number (SSID, Profile name, NAS name ....). Setting all of this values using the full serial number (more than 12 hex characters) working perfectly. Is there a way to strip that value to something more convenient (up to last 6 characters) using presets and external commands. 
Please advise the best way to achieve it.
